Egypt Parliament against investigation

CAIRO, June 4 (UPI) -- Egypt's National Assembly Saturday rejected an opposition demand to investigate complaints that women activists were physically attacked in a protest.

Legislators in the 454-seat Parliament said that more than 100 members had voted against the request.

The head of the liberal al-Ghad opposition party, Ayman Nour, supported by other opposition legislators, submitted a request to investigate the reported attacks against women that took part in an opposition protest.

The demonstration took place on the day of a referendum to amend the constitution to allow more than one presidential candidate, which the opposition boycotted.

Nour told lawmakers the aim of the investigation should be to find out who was behind the attacks against the women protesters.

Mubarak last week told U.S. President George W. Bush he ordered the attorney general to investigate the attacks.
