Romney's abortion stance under watch

BOSTON, June 3 (UPI) -- A political adviser to Mitt Romney apologized for confusion his quote about the Massachusetts governor's stance on abortion rights.

Michael Murphy, a Romney adviser who has been involved in helping other Republicans, said a quote from him used in a National Review profile of Romney was meant to show how the governor's political opponents try to paint him rather than Murphy's analysis of Romney's abortion rights position, the Boston Globe reported.

Romney, believed to be considering a Republican run for president in 2008, sought the Massachusetts governor's post with a campaign promise not to change state abortion laws. It was thought by some opponents that a conservative Mormon such as Romney would seek to roll back abortion rights.

The governors' apparent interest in the presidency spawned the National Review profile. Another conservative publication -- The Weekly Standard -- also has an article out on Romney, the Globe said.

Romney is expected to make a decision on a run for president by this fall.
