Indiana police kill hostage-taker

SHELBYVILLE, Ind., June 2 (UPI) -- Indiana police shot and killed a Cincinnati man after a 20-hour chase and standoff in which he took a female hostage in a Shelbyville convenience store.

"The hostage is alive, the hostage-taker is dead," 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten told the Indianapolis Star, identifying the Ohio man as Dennis McAninch, 34.

Bursten said police heard gunfire in the Bigfoot Convenience store 25 miles north of Indianapolis shortly after the suspect released his hostage unharmed at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday. They returned fire and killed McAninch, ending a standoff that began with a 35-mile police chase near Batesville on Interstate 74 Wednesday morning.

"It was basically just a traffic stop to see who they were and to find out if there was anything about them, and with that they took off," said Batesville Police Department dispatcher Connie Schutte.

"The minute the officer put his lights on to stop them, the chase was on."
