Afghan mosque blast kills 20

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 1 (UPI) -- The Kabul police chief was among 20 people killed in a suspected suicide bomb attack Wednesday at a mosque in the Afghan city of Kandahar, the BBC reports.

Kabul police chief Mohammed Akram was among hundreds who visited the popular mosque in the early morning to mourn a senior anti-Taliban cleric who was shot dead on Sunday.

There was a powerful explosion and eyewitnesses said that blood was everywhere. Some reports said there were up to 32 wounded and officials feared many more deaths.

The mourners were honoring Mawlavi Abdullah Fayaz, who was killed Sunday by two men on a motorcycle as he left his office. Fayez was a Taliban opponent and a supporter of the new Karzai government.

No group has yet said it carried out the attack.

Last month Fayaz, head of the government-appointed Islamic scholar's council, had condemned the Taliban at a meeting of about 500 clerics in Kandahar. He accused Taliban fighters of killing innocent civilians.
