Venezuela condemns U.S. visa cancellation

CARACAS, Venezuela, May 30 (UPI) -- Venezuela threatened Monday to bar U.S. officials from visiting the country after the U.S. visa for Venezuela's Supreme Justice was canceled.

Vice President Jose Rangel criticized the U.S. decision to withdrawal the visa of Venezuelan Supreme Court President Omar Mora and said the same could happen to visiting U.S. lawmakers wanting to visit his country.

U.S. officials declined to explain why Mora's visa was canceled.

Monday's spat is the latest diplomatic row between Venezuelan and the United States.

Last week the United Stated denied Venezuela's request Friday for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, charged in Venezuela with masterminding the bombing of a Cuban jetliner in 1976, killing 73 people.

Posada -- currently in U.S. custody -- has denied any involvement in the bombing. Both Venezuela and Cuba are demanding his extradition to Venezuela.

Both Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuban leader Fidel Castro have accused the United States of protecting Posada, violating its own anti-terror policies.

Earlier this month, declassified U.S. documents revealed Posada was a paid informant for the CIA during the 1970s and 1980s.
