Saudi king health reports conflict

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 29 (UPI) -- The conflicting reports about the health of Saudi Arabia's King Fahd has put some in the kingdom on edge, but there is no question of succession.

Saudi officials said Saturday, King Fahd, in his early 80s and incapacitated by a stroke since 1995, was in a stable condition after contracting pneumonia Friday, however, some medical sources said his condition was more serious and urged Saudis to pray for his recovery, reported the Independent Sunday.

Initial reports that the Saudi armed forces had been put on alert have been denied, but in the capital, Riyadh, there was no sign of extra security measures.

Saudi Arabia's designated heir, Crown Prince Abdullah, has been running the kingdom's day-to-day operations since his half-brother's stroke, however, should King Fahd not recover, the new king may have a sharp change in the style and direction of Saudi policy.
