Muslims protest alleged Koran desecration

CAIRO, May 28 (UPI) -- Demonstrations continued Saturday across much of the Muslim world over alleged U.S. desecration of the Koran, with many protesters demanding an apology.

The Washington Post reported the Muslim Brotherhood held rallies in the Egyptian cities of Cairo and Alexandria, where thousands of worshipers and protesters wiped their feet with paper replicas of the U.S. and Israeli flags.

An estimated 5,000 demonstrators in Alexandria chanted, "We have to hate them like they hate the Koran."

Newsweek magazine earlier this month published, but then retracted, a report saying U.S. interrogators put a Koran into a toilet in an attempt to intimidate a prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, the Post reported. Muslims believe the Koran is the literal word of God.

Demonstrations were also reported Friday in Pakistan, Malaysia, Jakarta, Beirut, Jordan, and in some Palestinian refugee camps, the Post said.
