
BAGHDAD, May 28 (UPI) -- At least 28 people were killed and dozens more wounded in five Iraqi cities within a 24-hour period, officials said Saturday.
Seven Iraqis died and 35 were wounded near a U.S.-Iraqi military base in the northwest town of Sinjar, Iraqi and U.S. officials said.
In Mosul, a roadside bomb exploded at a U.S. military checkpoint on a bridge, killing three civilians and wounding eight others, police said.
Government officials in Tikrit said two car bombs killed nine people and wounded 44, reported CNN.
In Latifiya, south of Baghdad, gunmen ambushed a car carrying four Iraqi soldiers dressed in civilian clothes and in separate attack, gunmen opened fire on a group standing where cars were sold, killing five and wounding one, according to police.
In Kirkuk, Sheik Naif Sabhan al-Khalaf, a Sunni tribal leader and supporter of the government in Iraq, died in a drive-by shooting outside his home, an Iraqi military official said.
