Bolton nomination to U.N.facing roadblocks

WASHINGTON, May 26 (UPI) -- A key Republican voiced concern about John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and Democrats threatened to stop the process.

After the Senate worked out a compromise regarding some of President Bush's nominees to the federal judiciary, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said he would turn to Bolton's nomination.

Bolton's nomination was sent to the full Senate without an endorsement from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. While that doesn't necessarily doom the nomination on the Senate floor -- Republicans have a solid majority in the Senate -- the vote is not guaranteed smooth sailing.

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., and Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said they would cause any Bolton vote to be delayed until they get requested documents about the nominee from the White House. Perhaps a bigger concern, however, is the statement from Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, that Bolton would be "controversial and ineffective" at the United Nations.

The White House has said it stands behind the nomination and expects Bolton to win Senate approval.
