Panel to look into government corruption

JERUSALEM, May 25 (UPI) -- An Israeli parliamentary committee has approved a proposal to set up a commission to investigate any corruption in the government.

Arieh Eldad, a Knesset member from the National Union party who initiated the move, said the country is sinking "in the mud of corruption," and "we must clean out the stables," Haaretz reported.

The ruling coalition failed to gather a majority to kill the proposal.

The decision to set up the commission is only a psychological victory for the opposition. Further parliamentary action is required to actually establish the panel.
