Pakistan arrests two suspected militants

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, May 24 (UPI) -- Pakistani authorities say they have arrested two men near the border with Afghanistan whom they suspect of being linked to militant groups.

After a tip-off by locals, Pakistani troops raided a small village northwest of the city of Peshawar. Two men were detained and two other suspects reportedly escaped.

The names of the two have not been released yet, but officials say they believe the men are Arabs.

Pakistan has deployed about 70,000 troops to the Afghan border region in its operation against suspected al-Qaida and Taliban militants. It is believed that hundreds of militants of foreign origin are hiding in that area.

Earlier this month, Libyan al-Qaida suspect Abu Faraj al-Libbi was captured in northwestern Pakistan -- a significant arrest because of his high position in the al-Qaida network.
