Egypt opposition urges referendum boycott

CAIRO, May 24 (UPI) -- Egypt's opposition daily al-Wafd Tuesday called on Egyptians to boycott Wednesday's referendum on amending an article in the constitution.

The liberal newspaper, mouthpiece for al-Wafd Party, said in a highlighted front-page statement: "Egyptians, remain at home tomorrow in this national day of mourning."

It added boycotting the referendum on allowing more than one candidate to run for president, with strict restrictions, would end the ruling National Party's "monopoly of the presidency and government institutions."

The paper told Egyptians the amendment did not meet the demands for reforms, but would only maintain the one-man candidacy referendum system in the polls, guaranteeing victory for President Hosni Mubarak for another term.

Egypt's opposition parties, including the banned Muslim Brotherhood movement, leftists and pan-Arab nationalist groups, called for a boycott of Wednesday's referendum.

They say the amendment makes it impossible for Mubarak's rivals to win.
