Cinema bombings may be linked to film

NEW DELHI, May 23 (UPI) -- Police in New Delhi Monday sought those responsible for two bomb attacks on movie theaters showing a film considered offensive by some Sikhs.

At least one person was killed and 100 injured in the Sunday blasts at the Liberty Cinema.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, the BBC reported.

Audiences were watching, "Jo Bole So Nihaal," or "Anyone Who Calls Out to God Will be Blessed," which has drawn protests and condemnation from a Sikh group because it uses religious symbols and text, the Times of London reported Monday.

A decision-making body of the Sikh religion has denounced the film, because it said the title misuses a term used only in Sikh temples or by Sikh warriors.

The bombings occurred on the first anniversary of the accession to power of the Congress party coalition.

Police have not acknowledged any link between the bombs and the film, the Times said.

Some said that police did not want to link the film and the bombings fearing it would inflame religious tensions, but New Delhi cinemas were evacuated and bomb squads searched for explosives.
