TSA buys $28m explosive detectors

WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- The Transportation Security Administration said Friday it had bought 32 new explosive detection machines for U.S. airports.

The TSA said it had purchased 32 new eXaminer 6000 Explosives Detection System machines from L-3 Communications in Woburn, Mass., for $28.1 million. The machines will be delivered by spring of 2006 to support the explosives detection systems currently under construction at a number of U.S. airports.

"TSA is currently operating nine checked baggage explosives detection in-line systems with eight full and two partial systems under construction," said Rear Adm. David M. Stone, USN (Ret.), Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for TSA. "The agency continues to partner with airports to develop creative methods to support the funding and installation of in-line systems."
