Guerrilla claims Posada had him tortured

MIAMI, May 20 (UPI) -- A former leftist guerrilla in Venezuela says Cuban dissident Luis Posada Carriles ordered his torture in the 1970s.

The orders allegedly occurred while Posada was a senior intelligence officer for a Venezuelan police agency, the Miami Herald reported Friday.

Former guerrilla Jesus Marrero said Posada interrogated him in 1973 and tried to force him to name fellow guerrillas. When Marrero refused, Posada allegedly ordered him to be shocked.

Posada, 77, is being jailed in the United States for entering the country illegally. An immigration hearing is set for June 13.

He told the Herald he entered the country at Brownsville, Texas, in March with the help of a smuggler.

Posada had been seeking political asylum, but withdrew that application and was arrested Tuesday in Miami.

He is accused in Venezuela and Cuba with masterminding the bombing of the Cuban jetliner taking off from Venezuela in 1976, killing 73 people.
