WASHINGTON, May 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department expressed concern Thursday over escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and called on Palestinians to stop mortar attacks.
"We have urged the parties to focus on how they can calm the situation and not to take any escalatory actions," spokesman Richard Boucher said.
Violence has flared in Gaza since Wednesday when an Israeli drone hit Hamas militants who had fired mortars and rockets at Jewish settlements.
Addressing the Palestinians, Boucher added they "have a particular responsibility at this time to end mortar attacks from Gaza" ahead of the Israeli withdrawal from the territory.
Hamas said militants fired 11 mortars and four locally made Qassam rockets at the Jewish settlement of Gush Katif in southern Gaza Wednesday in retaliation for Israel's killing of a Hamas gunman in Rafah.
An Israeli drone then hit a group of Hamas militants in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, Palestinian sources said. The raid was the first since an Israel-Palestinian cease-fire Feb. 8.
