MEXICO CITY, May 19 (UPI) -- After a meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said that Fox regretted comments made last week, El Universal reported Thursday.
"There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work, are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States," Fox said last Friday. The comment brought a torrent of criticism from African-American leaders in the United States but Fox's presidential spokesman continued to maintain Wednesday that what he had said was "misinterpreted."
Jackson, who met with Fox Wednesday, said Saturday the comment was "a spurious comparison" with "ominous racial overtones."
But on Wednesday Jackson told reporters in Mexico City that Fox "now realizes the harmful effects of it."
