WASHINGTON, May 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department Wednesday welcomed a border agreement between Russia and Estonia, saying it hoped the deal would help both sides come closer.

"The United States sees this as a welcome step that will be constructive for regional relations and will help Estonia and Russia move ahead from their painful past," spokesman Richard Boucher said in a statement.

The deal, which was signed in Moscow, comes after nearly a decade's delay and formally demarcates the border between the two nations. Relations have been frosty between them since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

The U.S. statement urged the parliaments of both nations to ratify the border treaty.
