Parachutist killed in Eiffel Tower jump

PARIS, May 18 (UPI) -- A Norwegian parachutist was killed in an attempt to jump from the second story of the Eiffel Tower as a celebration of Norway's national day.

The unidentified 31-year-old man failed to push off far enough from the 380-foot high platform, and was killed instantly when he struck the girders of the first story landing, The Times of London said Wednesday.

Another man who jumped with him landed safely.

The dead man's girlfriend told police the stunt was attempted Monday night in the run-up to Norway's national day Tuesday, and was being videotaped to be shown on the Internet.

Earlier, four Norwegians, thought to have been the same group, had been asked to leave the 56-story Montparnasse tower on the Left Bank after preparing to jump from the top.
