Jordan cancels anti-forum rally

AMMAN, Jordan, May 18 (UPI) -- Jordanian authorities have banned the Islamic-led opposition from organizing a protest rally against the World Economic Forum that opens in Jordan Friday.

The daily al-Ghad reported Wednesday that Amman's governor, Abdel Karim Malaha, had informed the Higher Committee for Confronting Normalization with Israel, which is led by the Islamic Action Front, that he retracted permission granted earlier to hold the protest.

The rally was supposed to take place Friday, the same day the forum opens at a tourist resort on the Dead Sea.

The Islamists and the opposition parties decided to boycott the forum to protest the participation of Israeli officials, notably Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Perez, Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom and Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
