U.S. State Dept. official to U.N. post

UNITED NATIONS, May 17 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Tuesday named the U.S. State Department's acting undersecretary for management to a similar position at the United Nations.

Annan announced in a statement Tuesday Christopher Bancroft Burnham would become the new U.N. undersecretary-general for management June 1, succeeding Catherine Bertini. Burnham's selection came at the end of a competitive process, the U.N. chief said.

Burnham was appointed by U.S. President George W, Bush as an acting undersecretary last February to oversee all global operations for the State Department, including diplomatic security, human resources, overseas building operations, administration, information resources, and consular affairs.

Burnham had been serving as the assistant secretary for resource management and chief financial officer of the department, leading all budgeting, accounting and disbursing, strategic planning, budget and performance integration, global financial operations, intelligence resource planning and critical infrastructure protection.
