Chile: Plane crashes, 10 feared dead

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 17 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed in southern Chile and rescuers said they were nearly certain all 10 passengers died.

The small plane went down Monday near Portezuelos. Chilean weather reports showed strong winds in the region at the time of the crash.

The skies in southern Chile can be particularly hazardous to navigate due to the numerous mountains causing radical shifts in wind patterns and air temperature.

"We have not lost hope of finding people who have survived the accident," Chilean Air Force Gen. Roberto Sarabia said Tuesday according to La Tercera.

However, other officials are conceding the passengers are all likely dead.
