WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- A Democratic congressman has praised the secretary of defense for sparing Michigan in its new round of military base closures.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Friday announced the closure of around 180 defense facilities including 33 major bases across the United States, but there were no major closures in Michigan.
Rep, John D. Dingell, D-Mich., the dean of the House of Representatives, released a statement praising Pentagon planners for their decisions.
"I am very pleased that the Department of Defense has wisely chosen to keep Michigan's military facilities largely intact and has even decided to expand some," Dingell said.
"The department has looked at Michigan's strategic importance, our universities, and our people and found that Michigan's bases should be expanding," he said. "Today's announcement is a testament to Michigan's civilian and military workforce and their dedication to a modern military that is efficient and strong."
Dingell also praised his fellow Democrat, Sen. Carl Levin, for having done what he called "a Herculean job of looking out for Michigan as the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee."
