Judge hears motions to drop Texas charges

AUSTIN, Texas, May 12 (UPI) -- A Texas judge has heard arguments on motions to dismiss state campaign finance charges against two associates of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

State District Judge Bob Perkins said he would rule June 27 on motions by lawyers for John Colyandro and Jim Ellis, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The lawyers argued Wednesday a state law that bans corporate contributions in Texas politics is so vague it invites selective prosecution.

Turner and Ellis are charged with money laundering and accepting corporate contributions to influence 2002 state house races. The 2004 Legislature redrew congressional lines in Texas that helped Republicans win five additional seats.

Republicans have accused Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, a Democrat, of conducting a political witch hunt.

Gregg Cox, an assistant Travis County district attorney, argued in the hearing that the indictment was correct and the law is constitutional.

A third GOP fundraiser, Warren RoBold, was indicted on separate charges, and was not involved in hearing.

DeLay has not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing.
