Terror suspect was CIA informant

HAVANA, May 11 (UPI) -- A Cuban dissident wanted on terror charges in Cuba and Venezuela was also a CIA informer according to declassified U.S. government files.

Luis Posada Carriles was an informant for the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, according to CIA and FBI files published by George Washington University's National Security Archive.

Carriles is also wanted in Venezuela for his role in the 1976 bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people. He was arrested but escaped from prison in 1985.

The Carriles, 77, was arrested in Panama in 2000 for plotting to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro during a summit there. However, he was eventually pardoned by Panama, prompting Cuba to break ties with the Central American nation.

In light of document declassification, Cuban President Fidel Castro again reiterated his call for Carriles to be brought to justice, Cuba's Granma newspaper reported Wednesday.

Carriles is currently in Miami having snuck into the United States via Mexico in March and is seeking political asylum.
