CAIRO, May 11 (UPI) -- Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif described his country's ties with the United States as troubled, but ruled out a U.S. attempt to oust the regime.

"U.S.-Egyptian relations are going through a troubled phase, but there are no ill intentions on any side," Nazif was quoted Wednesday as saying in daily al-Ahali, mouthpiece of the opposition al-Tagamoo Party.

"It is simply difficult to accept or swallow the idea that the U.S. administration wants to change the regime in Egypt ... Washington is eyeing positively President Hosni Mubarak's reforms," said Nazif, who is scheduled to visit Washington next week.

U.S.-Egyptian relations were strained following U.S. criticism of slow reforms and freedom restrictions in Egypt.

Cairo was also angered recently by U.S. President George Bush's call for international monitoring of Egypt's presidential and general elections next fall.
