WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- Northern Virginia officials fear U.S. Defense Department base closing, cost-cutting and security measures could cause a large loss of jobs in the area.
With Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld this week scheduled to give Congress a list of military bases to be closed, additional cost-cutting could affect the Washington suburbs in Northern Virginia where tens of thousands Defense employees work.
The Washington Post reported Tuesday as many as 50,000 employees would need to be moved from buildings that do not meet security rules mandating buildings be at least 82 feet from traffic to protect the structures from possible truck bombs.
Analysts said hardly any of the 140 Northern Virginia buildings leased by the Defense Department meets the requirement.
Rep. James Moran, D-Va., who represents the affected area, told the Post: "I think the process is about to drop an economic bombshell on Northern Virginia."
