WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- A Democratic Party-aligned polling group said women voters are returning to the Democrats as U.S. attention moves from terrorism to the economy.

Lake Snell Perry Mermin and Associates Inc. issued a release Monday claiming women selected an unnamed nominee for Congress by a 13-point margin over an unnamed Republican, The Washington Post reported. The firm compared the data to exit polling in November that showed President Bush lost the women's vote by 3 percentage points to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

It also said that several subgroups of women -- such as married women -- that voted Republican in 2004 were now more likely to be considering Democrats.

The release said that a change in the public's attention from homeland security to pocketbook issues was behind the swing.

A Republican pollster told the Post she did not disagree with the findings. Kellyanne Conway said: "Women, if left to their own devices, are going to tend and trend Democratic. ... Women are still congenitally Democratic."
