U.S.: Syrian land still used against Iraq

WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) -- The United States said Monday Syrian territory is still being used for insurgency in Iraq.

State Department's acting spokesman Tom Casey told a briefing in Washington the U.S administration is "seriously concerned" about elements of the former Iraqi regime operating from Syria. He said Washington has made it "pretty clear" to Damascus that this will not be tolerated.

"We do believe that Syrian territory continues to be used by those supporting the insurgency in Iraq;" said Casey, adding: "While we appreciate that there have been some efforts made by the Syrian government to tighten controls along the border, those problems remain."
