Mideast Quartet stalled on talk dates

MOSCOW, May 9 (UPI) -- The Middle East Quartet met in Moscow Monday but emerged with "no specific ideas" on when to next meet or what to do in the road map peace process.

Coming out of the foreign-minister-level meeting, Russia's Middle East envoy Alexander Kalugin said little progress had been made, the Interfax news agency reported.

"No specific ideas on the matter have been voiced so far, nor have any coordinated moves been made," he said.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan told reporters he still insisted on a complete and definitive Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the group "reiterated its commitment to the two-state solution, and to Israeli withdrawal as a way to re-energize the 'road map.'"

"The quartet emphasizes that this is a hopeful and promising moment for both Palestinians and Israelis," the statement said.

It noted: "A new Palestinian state must be truly viable, with contiguity in the West Bank," adding a state of "scattered territories will not work."

It urged both parties not to take steps "that prejudge final status issues."
