ROME, May 9 (UPI) -- Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini says the European Union should continue the path to Turkey's ascension even if France opposes it.
In an interview with the Financial Times Monday, Fini said he is aware of widespread French opposition to Turkish membership as France approaches its May 29 referendum on the EU constitution.
Fini said he was "rather optimistic" the French referendum would pass, but said even a French rejection should not deter the EU from embracing Turkey.
"In order to join, Turkey has made radical changes, including in terms of human rights," Fini said. "Turkey is already part of NATO. It's a pillar of stability in its region. It's a major Muslim country."
The deputy prime minister of Italy's center-right government said shunning the country after its changes and concessions ran the risk of "pushing them towards fundamentalism," as it would appear to be anti-Muslim.
"The accession of Turkey would be a sign of the full compatibility of Islam with democracy," Fini said.
