ZION, Ill., May 9 (UPI) -- Two second-grade girls who were best friends at a Zion, Ill. elementary school were found stabbed to death near a bike path in a wooded area, police said.
Lake County Medical Examiner Dr. Richard Keller identified the victims as Laura Hobbs, 8, and Krystal Tobias, 9.
Authorities said the young girls were reported missing about 8:50 p.m. Sunday and a search began almost immediately.
A Zion resident discovered the bodies of the two girls about 6 a.m. Monday in a heavily wooded nature area near a bicycle path in Beulah Park.
The girls were best friends in the same class at Beulah Elementary School, said Constance Collins, superintendent of Zion Elementary School District 6.
Each girl had been stabbed multiple times, officials said, adding they found no evidence of sexual assault.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force joined the investigation. No suspects were in custody and Zion police sought leads from the general public.
"The investigation is on going," said Keller. "Stab wounds were the cause of death."
