Man who raped, killed teen gets life

LONDON, May 7 (UPI) -- A Britain man who confessed to the abduction, rape and murder of a pregnant 14-year-old has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Philip Powell, a 43-year-old married father of four, confessed in court to confronting Amy Williams on the street, forcing her to walk for half an hour to a Madeley graveyard, and then raping and strangling her, the London Telegraph reported Saturday. Williams' body was later found sitting upright on a bench, six months pregnant and stripped naked.

Powell was arrested after DNA samples taken from Amy's body were matched with his profile, held on the database after he was convicted of possessing an offensive weapon in 1999.

Justice Wakerley ordered Powell to serve a minimum of 30 years.

"What you did was a terrible thing," the judge said. "You terrified a young girl. Your mind was on one thing and that was sex."

He said he could not predict a time when it would be safe to release Powell.
