DETROIT, Minn., May 7 (UPI) -- A Detroit mother said her 2-year-old girl was mauled to death by two large family dogs.
Samantha Black was pronounced dead at North Oakland Medical Center in Pontiac, Mich., police said.
"I can't begin to emphasize enough the horrific events that transpired this morning," Waterford Police Chief John Dean said Friday at a news conference. "There was a dog door large enough for a child her size to get through, no one knows exactly what happened."
Police said that the 40-pound child may have wandered through a dog door leading to the backyard and may have surprised the two female dogs -- 60-pound Nanook, a husky, and 80-pound Angel, an Alaskan Malamute, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.
Police said the dogs would be euthanized.
