Peru finds president guilty of vote fraud

LIMA, May 3 (UPI) -- Peruvian lawmakers decided Tuesday President Alejandro Toledo was involved in the falsification of voter signatures for the last presidential election.

Officials must now decide how to punish Toledo. So far, only removal from office has been ruled out, El Comercio newspaper reported in its online edition.

More than two dozen people, including a relative of the president, were accused of forging the signatures necessary to allow Toledo to run for Peru's highest office in 2000.

In December, the president's sister, Margarita, was placed under house arrest for her alleged involvement in the scandal. The Peruvian president adamantly denies his sister did anything wrong.

Toledo's approval rating is in the single digits due to ongoing corruption allegations and his inability to improve Peru's economic outlook or stimulate job growth.
