Two dead in second Sri Lankan bus crash

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, May 2 (UPI) -- A bus sped off the road Monday and hit two coconut trees, killing two people, in the same Sri Lankan town where 37 died when a train hit a bus last week.

At least 25 people were injured in the accident which took place in Polgahawela, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Colombo, Zee News reported.

"The bus driver was speeding and he must have lost control," said Rienzie Perera, a police spokesman.

It was the same town where 37 people were killed and 57 injured last Wednesday when a bus smashed into a commuter train while trying to dash through a railroad crossing.

After Wednesday's deadly crash Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse vowed to overhaul bus services and mete out tough penalties for offending drivers, the BBC reported.
