Russians give thumbs up to Stalin

MOSCOW, May 1 (UPI) -- A majority of Russians think Stalin's leadership helped win World War II, Interfax news agency reported Sunday.

A recent opinion poll, conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation, suggests that more than half of Russian citizens -- 58 percent -- think long-time dictator Josef Stalin made a large contribution to the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany.

Of the group who praised Stalin's war leadership, 68 percent were aged over 55, 65 percent were village residents and 85 percent were Communists, the news agency said. Only 18 percent of those surveyed, mostly from cities and people with a higher education, had a negative view of Stalin's war leadership.

The poll was conducted on April 23 and 24 in all Russia's 89 regions and

involved 1,500 respondents.
