Lebanon PM to visit Syria after pullout

BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 28 (UPI) -- Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati will visit Damascus Wednesday on the first trip to Syria after its pullout from Lebanon, officials said.

Nasri Khoury, the secretary-general of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council, said Thursday Mikati, whose government won a healthy vote of confidence in parliament Wednesday, will discuss mutual relations after Syria ended 29 years of military and intelligence presence in its smaller neighbor.

"The visit will have a political aspect by excellence. ... Talks will focus on political developments in the two countries and challenges facing the whole region," Khoury said after a meeting with Mikati.

Syria completed its pullout from Lebanon on Tuesday in conformity with U.N. Security Council resolution 1559.
