BEIJING, April 29 (UPI) -- China's number four in the Communist hierarchy, Jia Qinglin, hosted a banquet Thursday night for Taiwan KMT party chairman Lien Chan visiting Beijing.

Jia is member of the Politburo Standing Committee and heads the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a high-level advisory body dominated by the Communists which includes other political parties and non-party affiliated individuals.

State-run media said Jia spoke highly of the KMT's stand opposing Taiwan independence and promoting the development of cross-Straits relations.

"It is the trend of history and also the will of the Taiwan people that have brought us to the mainland," Xinhua quoted Lien as saying, adding the KMT chairman hoped a new era would be opened for cross-Straits exchanges through the visit.

On Friday, Lien will meet with Hu Jintao, China's president and General Secretary of the Communist Party. The meeting, the first in 60 years between leaders of the two parties, "will be of major historic and practical significance," Jia claimed.

The two will exchange views on major issues on the improvement and development of cross-Straits relations, plus party-to-party exchanges between the CPC and KMT, in an "extensive, in-depth and candid manner," according to Jia.
