Bush: Dems filibuster based on philosophy

WASHINGTON, April 28 (UPI) -- President Bush said Thursday that the Democratic filibuster of his judicial nominees is due to a simple reason -- they don't like the nominees' viewpoint.

"I think people are opposing my nominees because they don't like the judicial philosophy of the people I've nominated," he said Thursday night during a rare prime-time news conference. "I mean, some would like to see judges legislate from the bench. That's not my view of a -- the proper role of a judge."

Until Thursday, Republicans were working on legislation to take away Democrats' ability to filibuster nominations, saying their counterparts were obstructing the nomination process.

Bush disavowed comments by the right-wing Family Research Council that judicial filibusters are an attack against people of faith, but repeated his call for an up-or-down vote on his nominees.

"I think for the sake of fairness, these good people I've nominated should get a vote," he said.
