KABUL, Afghanistan, April 26 (UPI) -- German Defense Minister Peter Struck said Tuesday his country will assume more responsibility in Afghanistan.
"Germany is ready to take charge of the entire northern region," he said after talks in Kabul with Afghan officials, according to Deutsche Welle radio.
After parliamentary elections in the fall, the Afghan government plans to organize the country into four areas of responsibility. Germany will have the north.
Germany's parliament must still approve the move, which calls for the number of German troops in Afghanistan to be increased from 2,250 to 2,500.
Germany has the second-largest troop contributor in Afghanistan after the United States. Its troops are part of the International Security Assistance Force.
Most German troops are deployed around the capital, Kabul, and some 420 soldiers are stationed in the northern region as part of reconstruction teams.
