Teen attacked 4-year-old boy with hammer

HIGASHI OSAKA, Japan, April 25 (UPI) -- A 17-year-old Japanese boy arrested for a hammer attack on a child told police he did it after his attempt at mass murder failed.

The boy, charged with the attempted murder of a 4-year-old boy who is recovering in the hospital, repeatedly told police that he "wanted to commit mass murder," the Mainichi Shimbun reported Monday.

"I was aiming to commit mass murder somewhere else, but when that didn't work out, I thought I'd do something else to cause a stir," the boy told investigators.

Police said that shortly after the boy's arrest, he told them, "I got the kid at the park and was headed off for the next place, where I wanted to commit mass murder."

He later added: "I learned it's not as easy to kill somebody as I had thought. That being the case, I thought it'd be fun to turn myself in to police and admit to my involvement in the case to stir up the newspapers and TV."

Police said they had found in his home weapons and a "murder manual," giving detailed instructions on how to kill.
