More than a million support Mexico mayor

MEXICO CITY, April 25 (UPI) -- More than a million Mexicans flooded the streets of Mexico City in support of the mayor and his presidential aspirations.

Police estimated some 1.2 million people participated in Sunday's march for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who faces charges stemming from his decision to defy a judge's order in 2001 to halt construction of an access road to a hospital, El Universal reported Monday.

Dubbed the "March of Silence," some considered it the largest democracy march in Mexico's history.

Opponents of the mayor accuse Obrador of abusing his office to further his political ambitions. Many analysts project him as a frontrunner in next year's presidential elections set for July.

However, under Mexican law, Obrador would be barred from running in 2006 if he is facing criminal charges.
