WASHINGTON, April 25 (UPI) -- Three-term former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen was named director of the Kennedy School's Institute of Politics at Harvard University Monday.
"Her leadership, both on the state and national levels, combined with her intelligence and enthusiasm, will serve the IOP well," said David Ellwood, dean of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
The first woman to be elected governor of New Hampshire, Shaheen is a former state legislator who served as the state's chief executive for six years. In 2004, she was the national chairman for Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry's unsuccessful run for president.
"This will be a tremendous opportunity for me to work closely with young people, many of whom are just getting their first taste of political life," she said in a release.
Shaheen assumes her new post July 1, the university said, succeeding former Indiana Democratic U.S. Rep. Phil Sharp, who has been the institute's interim director since the departure of former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman in Sept. 2004.
