TSA faults Newark airport officials

NEWARK, N.J., April 21 (UPI) -- Two security directors at the Newark (N.J.) Liberty International Airport have been criticized in an internal management report, says the Newark Star-Ledger.

The review by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration singled out Marcus Arroyo, the airport's federal security director, and his deputy, Raymond Whalen, for what one official said were "management weaknesses."

The officials told the newspaper the TSA review accused Arroyo and Whalen of "critical shortcomings on personnel management and disciplinary actions," and that questions were raised about the "appropriateness of punishment" imposed on some subordinates.

Arroyo and Whalen both declined comment.

Problems at Newark Airport over the past year have included the loss of a fake bomb during a security test, persistent failure to spot prohibited items at checkpoints, low morale and chronic understaffing.

U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., a frequent critic of security at Newark, said: "I've been consistently disappointed with the reports of managerial breakdowns."
