BUENOS AIRES, April 19 (UPI) -- Argentine religious leaders praised the appointment of Germany's Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new pope, La Nacion reported in its Tuesday online edition.

The South American nation's bishops issued a statement saying they "applauded and were thrilled" with Ratzinger's selection.

However, many had leaders hoped a regional man of the clergy -- particularly an Argentine -- would assume the mantle as the Church's 265th pope.

Among the candidates was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, a conservative in the mold of Pope John Paul II and a staunch advocate of helping the poor.
