Illinois mob probe could clear cops

CHICAGO, April 18 (UPI) -- A probe into mob killings could clear Cicero, Ill., police of allegations of involvement in the deaths of an alleged drug-dealer and a bystander.

The shotgun killings of Richard Ortiz, a suspected drug dealers, and Arthur Morawski in 1983 were thought to have involved police. But the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday an ongoing federal investigation pins the shootings on a mob boss.

The newspaper cited unnamed law enforcement officers.

As many as 18 killings could be solved as a result of the investigation, the Sun-Times said. Some of the information was gleaned from mob figure Nick Calabrese, himself linked to a 1986 gangland killing, and other members of his immediate family.

The Sun-Times said criminal charges resulting from the investigation could be filed within a few months.
