Vatican preps world's most watched chimney

VATICAN CITY, April 16 (UPI) -- The Vatican has installed a rust-colored pipe on the Sistine Chapel's roof, which will be used to advise the world of a new pope's election.

White smoke means the secret conclave of cardinals has picked a pontiff to succeed Pope John Paul II; black smoke means no candidate secured a majority of the cardinals' votes, CNN reported Saturday.

The Vatican also says, for the first time, it will ring the bells of St. Peter's Basilica if a new pope is elected.

The conclave to find a new pontiff assembles Monday.

Pope John Paul II died on April 2 after a reign of 26 years, the third longest in the history of the 1.1 billion-member church.
