Detroit TV producer shot, suspect arrested

DETROIT, April 16 (UPI) -- A man believed to be responsible for the harassment of WDIV-TV Detroit employees has shot a television producer at the downtown studio.

A Detroit Receiving Hospital spokeswoman said the victim, John Owens, was listed in critical condition Friday night after about three hours of surgery. He was apparently shot in the armpit area, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday.

Police took a man into custody without incident Friday evening outside a southwest Detroit home and seized a green pickup truck that matched the description of one spotted at the scene, said James Tate, Detroit police second deputy chief.

"They're going through the process to ensure this is the person," Tate said. "We're not trying to put out any information that is going to compromise the investigation.

"We're pretty sure, but we want to positive before we put it out."

The gunman, standing in the station's vestibule area, was denied entry to the main lobby by a receptionist who believed he was a man who had assaulted employees in the past year. Owens walked into the vestibule while the receptionist was calling security and the gunman shot him and fled.
