Venezuela: Paraguay may pull ambassador

ASUNCION, Paraguay, April 15 (UPI) -- Paraguay is threatening to pull its ambassador from Venezuela following a brutal attack on the diplomatic official last week.

Ambassador Ana Maria Figueredo was attacked in the streets of the Venezuelan capital Caracas last Friday after attending a mass commemorating the death of Pope John Paul II.

Her attackers unknown, Figueredo says she received several blows to the head and body. A photo of the ambassador with one eye swollen shut appeared in the pages of Paraguay's La Nacion newspaper Friday.

Venezuela issued a statement apologizing for the attack and assured Paraguayan officials it would find the perpetrators and punish them "to the full extent of the law."
